India Landslides Claim At Least 89

Devastating landslides in Kerala's Wayanad district, India, have claimed at least 89 lives, with dozens more feared trapped. The disaster, triggered by heavy rains, struck in the early hours of Tuesday, affecting several areas in the hilly region. Rescue operations are ongoing but hampered by continuous rainfall and a collapsed bridge. Over 200 army personnel have been deployed to assist in search and rescue efforts, with 129 injured being treated in local hospitals and 250 people rescued so far. The tragedy has been described as the worst disaster in Kerala since the 2018 floods. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured federal government support, and compensation has been announced for victims' families. The area remains on high alert due to forecasts of more heavy rain, with schools and colleges closed in 10 of 14 districts.
