Nobel Winner to Lead Bangladesh
Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been appointed as Bangladesh's interim leader following the resignation and hasty exit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amid weeks of deadly protests. Yunus, a longtime political foe of Hasina and known for his pioneering work in microfinance, was chosen after students who led the protests refused to accept a military-led government. Yunus is a familiar face to the West. The unrest, which began with demands to abolish civil service job quotas, escalated into a broader anti-government movement resulting in over 400 deaths. Hasina's departure led to the release of some political prisoners, including former PM Khaleda Zia. Yunus, currently appealing a six-month jail sentence, faces the challenge of leading the country through this tumultuous period. International leaders have called for upholding democratic principles and refraining from violence as Bangladesh navigates this significant political transition.
