Counter-Protests Ignite in UK

Anti-racism protesters gathered in various English cities and towns in response to a week of anti-immigrant rioting, which was sparked by misinformation about a recent stabbing incident. While police were prepared for potential violence, the counter-protests were largely peaceful, with demonstrators showing support for refugees. Previous riots had targeted mosques, hotels housing asylum seekers, and businesses, resulting in over 400 arrests and more than 140 charges. The peaceful nature of Wednesday's events suggests that earlier arrests and sentences may have deterred further violence. Government officials condemned the riots, with Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner describing them as "thuggery" and emphasizing that such actions are not a legitimate way to express political concerns.
