Mpox Declared Health Emergency

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the mpox outbreak in parts of Africa a public health emergency of international concern. The outbreak, caused by a new and more deadly variant of the virus (Clade 1b), has killed at least 450 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo and spread to other African countries. Scientists are worried about the rapid spread and high fatality rate of this variant. The declaration aims to accelerate research, funding, and international public health measures to contain the outbreak. This situation is particularly concerning as it involves the more lethal Clade 1 strain, which has a higher mortality rate compared to the Clade 2 strain that caused a previous global outbreak in 2022.
